TV Gal Glosses Over the Globes
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) This year's Golden Globes gave me a lot to think about. Like did Brittany Murphy and Ashton Kutcher exchange pleasantries back stage? And how could Brittany be in love with Ashton last January and engaged to someone else this January? That's love Michael Vaughn style. And how come nobody told me that Christina Ricci and Adam Goldberg are dating? Who says the word "amazing" more -- Joan and Melissa or the "Queer Eye" guys?

But the biggest revelation I had is this -- we're all going to have to start watching "The Office."

I know it's supposed to be very funny, but (insert sounds of me whining here) it's on BBC America at strange times and I never remember. Obviously, I'm going to have to make it a priority.

Other thoughts on the Golden Globes:

  • Moment That Made Me Most Proud of Joan: The elder Rivers asked Kevin Costner's fiancee what she did. While the bewildered future Mrs. Costner stuttered through her answer that she made handbags (why is that always the fallback career for women who clearly don't have to work?), Joan launched into an all-out attack about her puny engagement ring. "You are a fool. It should be four times that size." Such good times, Joan.

  • Moment That Made Me Least Proud of Joan: Joan asked Dominic Monaghan of "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" if there would be a fourth "Lord of the Rings" movie. Such sad times, Joan.

  • Best Acceptance Speech: Bill Murray who deadpanned "I would thank the people at Universal or Focus except there are so many trying to take credit for this, I wouldn't know where to begin."

  • Worst Acceptance Speech: Ricky Gervais of "The Office" who was so bewildered accepting his award for best sctor in a comedy that he appeared ungrateful. Plus, I really wanted Matt LeBlanc to win so I'm a little biased.

  • Same Speech, Different Movie: Renee Zellweger's gushing acceptance speech was surprisingly similar to her win last year for "Chicago." She merely substituted in this year's cast and directors. Get ready for more "Anthony Minghella, thank you."

  • Halle Berry Award for Most Effusive Acceptance Speech: Charlize Theron

  • Best Dressed, Female: Jennifer Aniston. Runners Up: Charlize Theron and Allison Janney

  • Best Hair: Jennifer Aniston. Don't you think she's the only Friend who looks better now than when the show started?

  • Worst Dressed, Female: Was Nicole Kidman heading off to an ice-skating competition after the ceremony? That can be her only excuse for donning flesh colored fabric and gold sequins.

  • Worst Hair, Female: After Nicole Kidman (who perhaps I've picked on enough), I have to go with Scarlett Johansson.

  • Worst Dressed, Male: Sure it would be easy to go with director Peter Jackson (who so needed to wash his hair), but it's Elijah Wood who should have known better. Really, a green velvet suit?

  • Worst Hair, Male: I am truly sorry to report that Al Pacino was sporting a ponytail.

  • Worst Presenter: Between the references to drugs and the snide remarks ("I've known Michael Douglas longer than some men's wives have been alive"), I thought Danny DeVito's comments were far too off-color.

  • Most Gracious Acceptance Speech: Michael Douglas. How wonderful to recall his television days and give heartfelt thanks to his co-star Karl Malden.

  • Get Over It: I have a special message for Marg Helgenberger. Sweetie, I know you're upset about all the "CSI" spin-offs and we all agree that there really isn't any need for yet another detective show set in New York, but you are going to have to get over it.

  • Worst Golden Globe Moment: Even though I've been singing "We love Pacino. Oh, we love Pacino," I have to go with Globe's version of Outkast's "Hey Ya."

  • Best Presenters: It was great to have all the "Sex and the City" gals on the stage.

  • Best New Look: Holly Hunter

  • I'll Have Nightmares About: Johnny Depp's girlfriend, model Vanessa Paradis. She frightened me.

  • In Need of the Most Support: Once again J Lo needed a bra-o.

That's my wrap up. What's yours? Talk about it on the TV Gal Message Board.

    Quotes of the Week

"I think maybe I thought you were going to turn into one of those happy old widows that had a lot of old lady friends and cats like Andy Griffith." Ephram to Andy on "Everwood."

"We like Tobin. We're addicted to you." Lorelai comforting Michel that he'll always be their favorite on "Gilmore Girls."

"This is just not right. This is medieval." Troy about getting his legs waxed on "The Apprentice." Welcome to our world, Troy.

Seth Cohen Quote of the Week

"He watches Leno -- that explains everything." Seth about the unfunny guy on "The O.C." Thanks to TV Gal reader Diane for the quote.

To the TV Gal Reader Belong the Spoils

You know the rules. Don't read if you don't want to know.

You already know that Cordy will be back for the 100th episode of "Angel" on Wednesday, Feb. 4. She'll awake from her coma and will be more than a little dismayed that the gang is now working for Wolfram & Hart. She'll try to get Angel back on the right track, while he has security track Eve and Lindsay keeps up his evil plan for destroying Angel. Now will Cordy remember Connor?

Caleb will tell Kirsten to fire Julie on "The O.C." And Ryan and Luke will form an alliance to take down Oliver.

Just in time for the big day, Ed and Carol's siblings return to Stuckeyville. Timothy Busfield is back as Ed's brother on Friday, Jan. 30, and so is Stella, who will still have a thing for Warren.

Luke's sister pops by Stars Hollow on the Tuesday, Feb. 2 episode of "Gilmore Girls." After Rory tells her she's not being fair to Jamie, Paris will break up with her boyfriend and continue her relationship with the professor. When Jess tries to talk to Rory, she'll walk away without even speaking to him (That's my girl. You know I love Jess, but the boy left without saying goodbye.) Lorelai is about to tell Emily about Jason but chickens out when Emily tells her it would be just ridiculous if they were dating. Wait until Emily hears about how Lorelai can't sleep in Jason's bed.

And we'll be seeing Nina for awhile longer on "24." She's busy coming up with a plan to take down CTU.

And after much hard work by the TV Gal Search Party (I'm proud of you guys), Nina is back in "Everwood" on Monday, Feb. 2. She's going to talk to Andy about how he's been ignoring her in favor of Linda. Maybe she can have a little chat with the show runners too. Also Madison will lie to Ephram and tell him she likes a song he's written.

Chloe just never learns. She'll start investigating Adam on "Smallville."

Malcolm will pierce his tongue on "Malcolm in the Middle." It's a decision he'll regret once his tongue gets infected.

Lindsay will want a divorce on "Arrested Development," and Marta will admit her feelings for Michael.

J.D. will want to dump Danni on "Scrubs." But before he can make that happen, Danni will dump him via a message from Jordan.

Where Have I Seen Them Before?

Seriously, you have to be sitting down for this one. Remember last season on "Dawson's Creek," Joey babysat Harley, the professor's daughter. And remember how Harley's boyfriend Patrick had a crush on Joey? Um, do you know who played Patrick? Taylor Handley, the same guy currently playing Oliver on "The O.C." I know. I can't believe it either. But maybe if Joey had been nicer to him, we wouldn't be in this current predicament.

Bret Harrison was the guy who wasn't so funny on "The O.C." He plays Brad on "Grounded for Life" and is Adam Brody's real-life roomate.

Mike Starr, Kenny on "Ed," was Dr. Cox's kidney patient on "Scrubs."

Concetta Tomei, the dead mom who haunted Sydney on "Providence," was Chandler's mom on "7th Heaven."

Kellie Waymire played the woman wanting to have a baby with her dead husband's sperm on "Everwood." Waymire recently passed away and she was a very familiar face to TV fans. Waymire was Brenda's friend Melissa on "Six Feet Under," Liz on "The Pitts" and the woman who talked to Chandler and Monica about adopting this season on "Friends" (remember Chandler told her son that he was adopted.) Waymire will be missed.

    "The O.C.: 92663"

Oh, you know I'm not going to stop with the comparisons, because that's how we do things in the TV Gal column. First of all, we're all in general agreement that Sandy and Jimmy's new restaurant is poised to become the new Peach Pit (but where will the kids go after dark?). And TV Gal reader Shannon pointed out that Luke is so becoming the Steve Sanders of the group. I give you the following evidence: He had a relationship with the blonde pretty girl at the center of our story (remember Steve and Kelly dated back in the day), he has a gay parent and Summer laughed in the face of his sexual advances.

    Highlights of the Week Ahead
All times listed are Eastern Standard Time for Jan. 26 to Feb. 1

Okay, if I had to pick a cast most in need of a "Queer Eye" makeover, I'd have to go with the cast of "7th Heaven" (Monday, WB, 8 p.m.). First, we had to deal with Lucy's painful lack of eyebrows (was she auditioning for Charlize Theron's role in "Monster" too?) and then we had Chandler's greasy hair issue. Now Martin's eyebrows are out of control. I know Kyan could take care of that in just a couple of minutes.

Brian A. Green and Paris Hilton guest-star on next week's "Las Vegas" (Monday, NBC, 9 p.m.).

Due to popular demand, I will be giving "One Tree Hill" (Tuesday, WB, 9 p.m.) a third chance. You all swear it's getting better. I think my major problem is that I really don't care for Peyton (Hilarie Burton). She's even more annoying than Marissa. Don't you think?

Yes, that was Andrew you saw in the "Angel" (Wednesday, WB, 9 p.m.) promos.

Mira Sorvino guest-stars in one of my favorite episodes of "Will & Grace" (Thursday, NBC, 8:30 p.m.)

NBC is out of control with its schizophrenic scheduling. They're like the network who cried "February sweeps." NBC says "The Apprentice" will now air Thursdays at 9 p.m., but why should we believe them?

You know I really like "Joan of Arcadia" (Friday, CBS, 8 p.m.). With its off-kilter and at times awkward vibe, it's unlike any other show on television. And with its multiple story lines -- the police investigations, Kevin and his newspaper romance, and Joan and her divine command of the week -- it's never ever the same show twice. I often feel like I can't quite get a handle on "Joan of Arcadia" and that's a good thing. Plus there's not enough praise for the fabulous Amber Tamblyn. In this week's repeat, Joan tries out for cheerleading.

Sure the Super Bowl is important, and heck I've even contemplated purchasing a Mrs. Brady tank top (they're all the rage where I live), but we all know the main reasons we watch the Super Bowl -- the commercials, the halftime show and the show that comes on after the big game. This year, CBS will unveil "Survivor: All Stars." Now who do you think will be voted off first? Smart money would point to the gang wanting to get rid of Richard (in fact, wouldn't they want to get rid of anyone who has already won a million bucks?), but we learned the first time around not to count Richard out too soon.

That's all for today. Starting next week you get two TV Gal columns for the price of one for February sweeps. So I'll be back next Monday and Thursday with thoughts on "Everwood," "Angel" and "24." Have a question, seen a familiar face, have an inside scoop or want to nominate a quote of the week?
